Frequently Asked Questions
Is there steel in RUBBER NUGGETS?
No. We guarantee to each and every one of our customers in writing that RUBBER NUGGETS are steel free.
Do RUBBER NUGGETS burn?
Yes... just as well as mulch.
We've had both tested and RUBBER NUGGETS is slightly better than mulch when it comes to flammability.
Are RUBBER NUGGETS toxic?
No. RUBBER NUGGETS have been tested in two different ways for toxicity and found to be non-toxic.
Do RUBBER NUGGETS float?
Yes. If you throw RUBBER NUGGETS into a swimming pool they will float, which is why it is important that you have an area that drains well.
Unlike mulch, RUBBER NUGGETS will not absorb water and, unlike mulch or sand, does not combat, so the water will drain right o the bottom of the area. It is one of the best attributes of RUBBER NUGGETS. In fact, the kids can go back out and play about 20 minutes after even the hardest rain.
Do you have a MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for RUBBER NUGGETS?
We are not required by law to have an MSDS on this product because we are just taking an existing product and changing its form.
We are not adding anything to the tire, just taking away some of the loose fibers, dust-size particles of rubber, and the steel. An MSDS on tires is applicable to any MSDS on RUBBER NUGGETS.
Do RUBBER NUGGETS come in colors?
No, not at this time. We have decided, for the time being, against this option because it would make our product more expensive and have no real benefit.
There is also very little testing data out on companies that offer coloring systems for this type of product - on how well the color holds up to weather elements; toxicity concerns - it might add to our non-toxic product; concerns about the color coming off on the children's clothes, etc.
Are RUBBER NUGGETS ADA (American Disability Act) approved?
No. RUBBER NUGGETS are not handicapped accessible without the use of rubber mats.
If you could push a wheelchair through it, then it wouldn't be as cushioned as it is now. A large part of RUBBER NUGGETS' cushioning quality comes from the air pockets that are found in our product because it does not compact. If we compressed this product into a mat form, it would then be wheelchair accessible, but would loose a great deal of its cushioning quality and be extremely expensive to install.
Most mats require a base of asphalt or concrete for the glue used to hold the mats in place. They will range in price from $10 to $15 per square foot. Mats are very good for wheelchair accessibility, but not for cushioning quality. If you need to make your playground wheelchair accessible, a good method is to use the mats in conjunction with RUBBER NUGGETS. put the mats in trails where the wheelchair needs to travel and RUBBER NUGGETS everywhere else. This will not only make your playground wheelchair accessible and cut down on the cost of surfacing your playground (in comparison to putting mats on the entire surface), but also keep the playground safe for ALL the children (both handicapped and non-handicapped).
How long do RUBBER NUGGETS last?
We guarantee RUBBER NUGGETS for a 50-year life span against decomposition.
This guarantee is based on EPA estimates of 80-year decomposition for half-life of tires. This guarantee is not valid in cases of vandalism or for physical loss (being kicked out of the area and dug into the ground, being carried off in the children's pockets, etc.) of the product, which is why it is so important to use the borders and also to properly maintain the product.
Do RUBBER NUGGETS get hot in the summer?
No, RUBBER NUGGETS do not compact and therefore has room for air circulation throughout. It is not like asphalt where the surface is solid and has no airflow to cool down the absorbed heat.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not recommend that children be allowed to play on any loose surface without shoes, because of the possibility of concealed glass, nails or other dangerous objects. We do recommend to our customers that they post highly visible signs requiring shoes for children using the playground.)
What kind of maintenance do RUBBER NUGGETS require?
Every once in awhile you'll want to go out and smooth over the "divots" in the play area, like under the swings and at the bottom of the slides, where the kids will tend to push the product around.
Will RUBBER NUGGETS get the children dirty?
No. This is probably one of the cleanest products you can use. Children may need to wash off occasionally, especially in areas of coal trains and no rain.
I can get mulch for free. Why should I use RUBBER NUGGETS?
There are sevearl reason why you should choose RUBBER NUGGETS over mulch.
The most important reason is the safety factor. We cannot emphasize enough how cushioned RUBBER NUGGETS are and it is just as difficult for you to tell by looking at a picture or at a plastic bag sample. We highly recommend visiting one of our installations and testing our RUBBER NUGGETS yourself. Once you've had a chance to walk on it, you'll be instantly sold.
